Breast cancer is described as a disease, characterized by the abnormal growth of cells in the breast tissue, most commonly in the milk ducts or lobules. It can occur in both men and women, although it is far more common in women. Breast cancer can manifest in various forms, including invasive ductal carcinoma, invasive lobular carcinoma, and less common subtypes like inflammatory breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer.
My Connection to Breast Cancer:
However, breast cancer isn’t just a disease; it’s a journey that touches the lives of countless individuals, including those closest to me. While I didn’t personally battle breast cancer, my mother did, and her experience with breast cancer left an indelible mark on my life. As I reflect on her journey, I’m reminded of the struggles we faced and the small moments of connection that brought us closer together during her battle with breast cancer.
When I received the news of her terminal breast cancer diagnosis, I broke down crying on the NYC Subway. In true New York fashion, strangers consoled me and did their best to comfort me as I was on my way to class. At the time, our relationship was strained, but her diagnosis became a catalyst for reconciliation and closeness as we navigated her terminal illness together. Despite the challenges, I cherished the moments we shared, like visiting her at Sloan Memorial while I was a graduate student at NYU. Bringing her favorite Starbucks drink and lemon pound cakes, and painting her nails with her beloved red polish, became cherished rituals that symbolized our bond and resilience in the face of adversity.
As her condition worsened, my mom made the decision to spend her final days at home, surrounded by the warmth and love of family. I’ll never forget the moments we shared during those final days, like the time she somehow knew I was tearing up next to her, despite the hospital bed railing blocking her view, and asked with concern if I was crying, despite her own pain and discomfort. That only made me cry even more.
During the days that followed my mother’s passing, I found solace in unexpected moments that reminded me of her enduring presence. The lights in my apartment twinkled on the day she left us—a subtle yet unmistakable sign that she was still with me. As I helped my family pack up her belongings, I encountered another moment of connection. In my sister’s bedroom, I caught a glimpse of her spirit, lingering as if reluctant to say goodbye. With a sense of calm familiarity, I greeted her with a wave before continuing with my task. It was a moment of soft humor and comfort, a reminder that although our loved ones may no longer be physically present, their spirits remain a source of support and love.
Her passing left a profound void in my life, but her strength, courage, and unwavering love continue to inspire me every day. Through the pain and loss, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of cherishing moments with loved ones and advocating for those affected by breast cancer.
Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness:
In honor of my mother’s memory and the countless others affected by breast cancer, I’m committed to raising awareness and supporting initiatives dedicated to finding a cure. By sharing our personal stories, we can inspire hope, foster empathy, and ignite positive change in the fight against breast cancer.
There are countless ways to make a difference, whether through participating in fundraising events, advocating for early detection and screening, or simply offering a listening ear to those in need. Pink-Washing Awareness:
While purchasing pink-washed products may seem like a simple way to support breast cancer awareness, it’s essential to recognize that not all pink products contribute to meaningful change. Many companies capitalize on Breast Cancer Awareness Month by selling pink merchandise without transparency about where the proceeds go or how they benefit those affected by the disease.
Instead of blindly purchasing pink items, we encourage you to take the time to research and support organizations and small businesses that are actively making a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Look for charities and grassroots initiatives that have a transparent mission, allocate funds directly to research, support patients, or advocate for policy change. Your money and time are better spent supporting initiatives that have a tangible impact on breast cancer prevention, treatment, and support services.
By investing in organizations and businesses committed to real change, you can ensure that your contributions have a meaningful and lasting impact on individuals affected by breast cancer.
Overall, breast cancer is more than just a disease—it’s a journey that touches the lives of countless individuals and families. By sharing personal stories, supporting charities, grassroots initiatives, and small businesses dedicated to breast cancer awareness and research, we can make a real difference in the fight against this disease.
Let us honor the memories of those we’ve lost, uplift survivors, and continue to advocate for better prevention, treatment, and support services for those affected by breast cancer. Together, let’s stand in solidarity, raise awareness, and work towards a future where breast cancer no longer takes lives. With each step we take and each dollar we donate, we move one step closer to a world without breast cancer.
Thank you for joining us in this journey. Your support and commitment are invaluable in our collective fight against breast cancer.
